As a diocese, we’re supporting our oldest parishes in the very center of our cities. Many have been troubled byeconomic difficulties, changing neighborhoods, and loss of members. Rather than throw up our hands in despair at the balance sheets and the demographics, we’re working with parish leaders to see where the parish can grow, change, and “be church” in the surrounding neighborhood. Tough urban ministry demands a lot from those who have pledged themselves to it. The funds aren’t always easy to justify. But we’re sticking with it. After all, if the Episcopal Church isn’t found in the heart of our cities, what does that say about our commitment to Christ? |
