As Bishop Sisk?s says, 'From my experience, first as a seminary dean for 14 years and now for the last 12 years as a bishop, the thing that priests and deacons do not expect (I certainly didn't) is the extent to which, once ordained, their lives are not their own. The ordained person becomes a "public person" whether she or he expects to or not, whether he or she wants it or not. It is simply a fact.' The purpose of the conference is to reflect on this fact and its several dimensions. When Monday through Wednesday, October 5 ? 7. Begins Monday with registration at 4:30 pm. Roxey Ballet re-stages a spectacular original interpretation of Dracula in the eerily-appropriate setting of the crypt of the Cathedral as part of the Cathedral Arts Series at Trinity. The original ballet choreography closely follows Bram Stoker's horror story set in 19th century England and tells the tale in a theatrical performance with original music and sound effect and multimedia projections all created by David Hannoman. Roxey Ballet's performance offers a kaleidoscope of sound and visual effects depicting the range of characters and their emotions of fear, rage, horror, love and passion. The result is a production that breaks through normal boundaries of dance performance to draw the audience deeply into the world created by the dancers and Stoker's story. The audience will recognize the unwary Renfield who accidentally falls victim to the vampire on his way to the opera; the lovely Lucy, whose beauty attracts Dracula, who seduces her; and Dr. Van Helsing who leads the attack to rescue Lucy and the others who have fallen prey to the vampires. Dracula features original choreography by Mark Roxey, lighting and special effects by Tony Siniscalco and an abstract set design designed by Lisa McMillan adapted to accentuate the unique setting of the Cathedral's crypt. Performances on Friday are at 8:00 pm and midnight; on Saturday, 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Both Friday performances and Saturday matinee: $25; Saturday evening performance: $30. One of the key elements of Cursillo is to build up the Church in the world through groupings of people in their environments. One form of this grouping is Ultreya, a Spanish word meaning Onward. This is where members of Group Reunions come together as a larger community to pray together, read the Word of God, have access to spiritual direction, share, inspire and encourage one another to persevere in our Fourth Day. For those Cursillistas that have not yet joined or formed a Group Reunion it inables them to connect with other Cursillistas to form these groups that meet regularly. Ultreya is a vital part of our Cursillo movement. The Group Reunion satisfies the basic need for the individual for a sense of growth and community; the Ultreya satisfies the need for growth in community and being part of the Church in the world. Both are necessary to achieve the ongoing work of evangelizing the environments in the world. Finding that more unites than divides The Episcopal Church, the comprehensive report, called Around One Table, highlights the many attributes and feelings that are common to Episcopalians. "Around One Table is a multi-layered initiative designed to engage people in constructive conversations about the identity and mission of the Episcopal Church and how that relates to their lives and ministries," the report states. The Around One Table report, along with videos and other useful information, are available at: www.episcopalchurch.org/aroundonetable This first-of-its-kind report cites among the top findings: "Episcopalians passionately want their church to hold Christ as central and believe their church attempts to do so. Episcopalians see the Church both actually and ideally as a people of the book whose faith is united by and expressed in their Book of Common Prayer. Episcopalians view their Church as both aspiring to hold and successfully expressing a sacramental understanding of the Christian life and relationship with God." "Understanding who we are is essential to knowing what our task is," said Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori. "Sometimes we sum up that quest for understanding as knowing 'who we are, whose we are, and where we're going.' Around One Table offers Episcopalians an objective tool to use in discovering how the broader community of Episcopalians is answering those questions." Especially important at a time when some are discussing division within the Church, Around One Table illustrates the many commonalities among members of The Episcopal Church. "The findings are broad in scope, richly descriptive in content, and current in reflecting Episcopal identity as expressed by Episcopalians themselves," noted Dr. Mathew Sheep, assistant professor at Illinois State University and primary researcher in the Episcopal Identity Project. "When navigating the whitewater of change and the uncertainty that sometimes ebbs and flows around it, what is core to an organization's identity is such a crucial foundation from which to build and grow." Around One Table was sponsored by the College for Bishops and CREDO Institute, Inc., and is based on the Episcopal Identity Project conducted by researchers from the University of Cincinnati, Pennsylvania State University and Illinois State University. The Around One Table report was written by the Rev. Dr. David Gortner of Virginia Theological Seminary, and three Episcopal Identity Project researchers: Dr. Elaine Hollensbe of the University of Cincinnati; Dr. Mathew Sheep of Illinois State University; and Dr. Glen Kreiner of the Pennsylvania State University. "Around One Table offers a mirror to reflect upon The Episcopal Church and its perceived identities," commented Dr. Timothy Sedgwick, professor at Virginia Theological Seminary and member of the College For Bishops Advisory Committee. "The breadth of perceptions--bishops, clergy, retired clergy, and members of congregation--offers an account persons will recognize as the Episcopal Church they know with all its struggles and diversity. A center, though, is clear: the Episcopal Church understanding of Christian faith as Christ centered, grounded in Scripture, born by the church as sacramental, mediated by the Book of Common Prayer, and creating a pastoral community." Episcopal Identity Based on years of extensive research, the primary goal of Around One Table is to discuss Episcopal identity. To that end, the research discovered 23 identity themes that Episcopalians used most often to describe themselves. President of the House of Deputies Bonnie Anderson noted, "If we, The Episcopal Church, cannot articulate who we are, how on earth can we evangelize others? How can we possibly expect God's Church to grow if we don't have the words to explain ourselves?" She continued, "How do we know if we are on the 'right track' if we can't say what track we are on? The Episcopal church is a complex organization, but just how complex are we? If the term, 'Catholic light' is a default description that we sometimes use in explaining our identity as the Episcopal Church, then Around One Table is essential for reflection and discussion." The report notes that Around One Table is a "mirror for those inside The Episcopal Church and a window for those outside" by exploring four major areas: how Episcopalians understand the identity and character of the church; ways that members identify with the church on many levels; how Episcopalians talk with and about each other; and how Episcopalians "respond to challenging issues." Who was surveyed? The multi-method study collected data between 2004-2008, based on 2569 surveys and 75 interviews including bishops, lay and clergy deputies, seminary deans, active and retired clergy, and laity. The detailed breakdown of the 2569 surveys is: 92 bishops; 414 active clergy; 385 retired clergy; 674 lay and clergy General Convention deputies; and 1004 laity. The 75 interviews were conducted with: 22 bishops; 14 General Convention deputies; 18 lay and ordained leaders representing various positions and concerns; and 21 Episcopalians who have garnered media attention in the past. Findings Findings in this pioneering report include: -"Episcopalians passionately want their church to hold Christ as central and believe their church attempts to do so. -"Episcopalians see the Church both actually and ideally as a people of the book whose faith is united by and expressed in their Book of Common Prayer. -"Episcopalians view their Church as both aspiring to hold and successfully expressing a sacramental understanding of the Christian life and relationship with God. -"Episcopalians view the church as committed to sacramental and incarnational understanding. -"The Episcopal Church gathers around the Book of Common Prayer as one of its core unifying features and most profound expressions of faith. -"Episcopalians see their Church as holding multiple theological perspectives, both locally and broadly, and have a deep appreciation for this aspect of Episcopal life. -"Episcopalians would very much like to de-emphasis any notion of their church as elite." "Even among those who most strongly disagree with one another, there is some deeply held common agreement about core themes that are most central to Episcopal identity - holding Christ as central, ordering around the Book of Common Prayer and a sacramental life of faith, emphasizing scripture, holding incarnational theology as important, and being pastoral in response to life's challenges," observed Gortner. "The findings also provide some exciting opportunities for deeper discussion about how Episcopalians choose to live and express what is most central, enduring, and distinctive about their shared Christian life and faith." Uses for Episcopalians "I hope that this material will be used to enrich conversations, guide theological and biblical discussion, help all Christians in the Episcopal Church become more articulate about what they believe their Church stands for, and encourage decision-making that takes into account the central versus more peripheral concerns of our Church," Gortner said. Noted Anderson, "In the Around One Table report, the Church is presented with a springboard for conversation and reflection about Episcopal Identity." Sedgwick agreed. "Around One Table opens conversations for newcomers to the church and old timers in the church. It holds the promise of creating deeper understandings of the faith shared in common and of making sense of areas of disagreement and conflict." The Presiding Bishop concluded, "The findings of this study will be important in shaping understandings of identity and mission, as well as guiding formation for all Episcopalians. Conversations prompted by Around One Table have the ability to strengthen relationships within and beyond this Church as we seek to live as faithful members of this part of Christ's body." Additionally, the findings delineated in Around One Table will contribute to a larger overall communication strategy for The Episcopal Church The Episcopal Church, with 110 dioceses in 16 nations, is a member province of the worldwide Anglican Communion. United Thank Offering A total of $15,816 was forwarded to the United Thank Offering Committee at the end of June. This was $7,293.82 less than a year ago. A sign of the times. A note to Parish Coordinators: the grant application forms should be in the Diocesan Office early in October, I have had three inquiries regarding grants for next year. If you know of any parishes that are planning to apply, they should get their requests in as early as possible with all the necessary documentation so it can be reviewed as each diocese is allowed only one grant request. This year the Diocese of New Jersey received a grant of $15,000 for its companion diocese, Central Ecuador, for development of economic and productive capacities for women of Chimborazo Province. Respectfully submitted, L. Marie Williams Mission Response 2009-2010 Mission Response is part of the outreach program of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of New Jersey. Each year each parish is asked to participate in this endeavor. Three projects are selected: one is international to which 25% of the money is sent, one is national which receives 25% and one is diocesan which receives 50%. The suggested amount for each parish is $50.00. All monies collected are distributed. For 2009-2010 the projects are: International - Women to Women National - Jericho Road Episcopal Housing Initiative Diocesan - The Health Clinic at St. Wilfred's Church, Camden Women to Women: is a program in which money is given to women in under privileged areas that they may start small businesses and become self sufficient. Jericho Road Episcopal Housing Initiative: is a project begun by the National Episcopal Church Women to help rebuild or restore homes in the area of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina. The more money received the more families that can be helped. The Health Clinic at St. Wilfred's, Camden; is a new endeavor in connection with Lourdes Hospital to help the needy and unemployed with medical care in the Camden area. These are very worthwhile projects and the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of New Jersey hope that your Parish will want to help. Every dollar received by us for Mission Response will be sent to these three programs. This year's theme was "Grow In Grace" from II Peter 3:18. We want to thank the women of the Diocese for allowing us to represent you at this wonderful gathering. As was the case with delegates from all across the country, some of us had attended several meetings before and others were first time delegates. We each had different experiences and we want to share some of that with you. I have asked each of us to write a note about the meeting. Carolyn Belvin Newsletter Editor Triennial Report I want to say it was an honor and privilege to attend the Triennial Meeting in Anaheim. The meetings were very informative and many things were accomplished. It was interesting to hear many speakers and meet women from different parts of the country and world. There were many conferences to attend and they were well attended. Mass was held at 11:30 am every day with different celebrants. A play was presented by the members of the National ECW Board "Yet We Persist" and it was very interesting and informative. I will always remember and be thankful that I was able to attend the Triennial as a delegate. In His Name. Faithfully, Edna Haney Triennial Meeting 2009 Report As the Diocesan United Thank Offering Coordinator I was privileged to attend the 46th Triennial Meeting of the Episcopal Church Women in Anaheim CA. The meeting ran from July 8 through July 17 with the Diocese of Los Angeles as the host. From the opening celebration until the closing the Triennial Meeting was for me a very special time - a chance to become a part of a much larger group of dedicated women, with a common bond - a time of prayer, worship sharing, thanksgiving and work, lots of it. The early morning hearings made a lot of the work much easier and we were able to complete all of the agenda items and then some. The theme for the meeting was from II Peter 3:18, "Grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." I believe the almost 400 delegates and alternates attending this Triennial meeting did grow in grace during our time together. Our chaplain for the meeting was The Rev. Dr. Ellen Sloan from the Diocese of Newark; her "Gathering Times" brought us together and set the tone for the day. Every day we had the opportunity to look at grace in a different way. Her Chaplain's time at the end of the day's plenary sessions were very inspirational and uplifting. Musicians for the meeting were David Stankey and Nancy Bench from Irvine, CA. Every day we also attended daily worship with General Convention. At the opening celebration the Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori greeted the women, shook hands with and presented each of us with a golden ECW cross, which had been blessed by her. We had great speakers; the keynote speakers were The Right Rev. Stephen Charleston and Ms. Phyllis Thickle. Bishop Charleston in his address on Grace reminded us that "grace is not a stroke of luck but is love at work" that grace can change a person and that if one wanted to really understand grace we needed to listen to the story of Mary, the mother of Christ and suggested that we all read the book of Mark. Ms Tickle spoke to us about the difficulties of understanding grace; she suggested it is probably best described as beauty, using the Old Testament story of Tamar to illustrate. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams addressed the meeting. He thanked the women of the church for sharing their prayers and experience. The United Nations Anglican Observer, Helen Wangusa also spoke to us about what she does for the United Nations and asked for the women's continued support. A play by Katerina Whitley, "Yet We Persist" performed by members of the National ECW Board highlighting the history of the ECW was presented at the Welcoming Dinner. It was well received. At the United Thank Offering Dinner, the Right Rev. Michael Curry, Bishop of North Carolina told us the ministries of the UTO and ECW are sorely needed in this time of change. They are "missions of witness." He told us you would not find the word mission in the Bible but it is all over the Bible. The word GO is there and go means mission. We should take go seriously. He cited many biblical passages and asked the UTO and ECW to continue to go and spread the good news of Jesus Christ. Seventy-three dioceses submitted women to honor at the Triennial Meeting. Carolyn Belvin was New Jersey' honored woman. There were visits from the Youth Presence, from Sarah Eagleheart of the Native American Indigenous Ministries, the Very Rev. David Du Plantier, dean of the Cathedral in New Orleans, the Bishops from Mississippi and Louisiana and Robert Radtke, president of Episcopal Relief and Development who talked about Hurricane Katrina and the Jericho Road Housing Initiative who expressed their thanks and appreciation for the work done by the ECW, a speaker for Project Dignity, an outreach effort for Orange County, and a National Cathedral representative. We also had a Share Fair, Tee Shirt Day and a great variety of workshops to choose from. The United Thank Offering Ingathering at the Sunday morning Eucharist, attended by almost 10,000 was beautiful, over seven million dollars was collected during this triennium, and on Sunday Evening, Elizabeth Von Trapp presented an evening of entertainment to benefit the Jericho Road Project. It was a most enjoyable evening. The Diocese of Los Angeles presented an interesting event on the emerging church title "Genesis From Breath to Wonder" featuring Brian McLaren, the music was lively yet the dialogue was reverent and an artist who painted on glass rendered the service, changing the picture as the service progressed. A different concept but something to think about. We also participated with General Convention, in a joint project, Mission Conversations through Public Narrative. I imagine we will hear more about this. Sixty-two UTO grants totaling $ 2,065,472.43 were awarded. New Jersey received a $ 15,000.00 grant for its companion diocese, Central Ecuador for development of economic and productive capacities for women of Chimborazo Province. A special plenary session was called for the last day of the meeting after it was learned the a UTO Advisory Board, appointed by the Presiding Bishop and House President to oversee how the UTO is managed and its grant process have no ECW representation and only one UTO committee member. Women at the triennial expressed their concern that this was a "money grab", after much discussion with Advisory Board members present; it was decided to draw up a resolution to present to the House of Bishops and House of Deputies the next day. Upon learning that Women's Ministries was cut from the Budget it was voted that a resolution regarding this be presented also. At the closing ceremony, ECW and UTO officers and committee members for the next triennium were elected and installed. Promises were made to keep in touch, good bys said and a feeling of having accomplished much during this Triennial Meeting were expressed. Though this was a very busy two weeks, I did find time to visit the Daughters of the King Prayer Garden in the Exhibit Hall, the Ecclesiastical Art Collection and on Friday after the Convention's Closing Eucharist, I was able to spend a couple of hours at Disney Land before packing my bags to leave early the next morning. My sincere thanks for the opportunity to represent the diocesan women at this meeting. L. Marie Williams UTO Coordinator TRIENNIAL REPORT From Nancy Gorman, former Secretary and Province II Representative on the National Board of Episcopal Church Women Now that the 2009 Triennial is a thing of the past, I have many wonderful memories to share from that unbelievably fast two weeks (minus one night) that I spent in Anaheim, California. I'm so glad I ordered a mechanized scooter that was a blessing to get around the many sections of the Convention Center, as well as the Hilton Hotel adjacent to the Convention Center. Our Welcoming Dinner on Wednesday evening featured the premiere of a new play written for us by Katerina Whitley, entitled Yet We Persist. This is a historical reflection on the history of Episcopal Church Women from the 1860's up to the present day, and was presented by the members of the National Board, with music interludes provided by our Triennial Musicians, David Stankey and Nancy Beach. It was wonderful to hear the response of the audience and to see their reactions to the many parts of our history. Another important part of the Triennial Meeting was the Honored Women program on Friday afternoon. Our own Newsletter editor, Carolyn Belvin, was the honoree from our Diocese and she received a lovely originally designed pin and appropriate certificate to mark the occasion. I'm sure the other members of our delegation have spoken about the rest of the program, but I just want to thank everyone from the Diocese of New Jersey for the support of the work of Episcopal Church Women. It has been a wonderful experience for me to participate in the activities from my local parish, Christ Church, Riverton; the Burlington District; the Diocesan Executive Board; the Province II; and finally, the three years as your representative on the National Board. Triennial Reflections I have asked each of our delegates to Triennial to write a little about our meeting for this newsletter so you all get a feel of how special these meetings are. It is interesting to see how each of us is able to share a different aspect of the same meeting. This was a very special Triennial for me. This was the sixth time I have had the privilege to attend and each time I had a different position and experiences, from delegate, Diocesan President (for New Jersey and Rochester), Province II President, and alternate delegate, to this very special one of representing you as your Honored Woman. Each Triennial had a different feel but each also brought together wonderful people from all across the country who share common interests and mission. The Honored Woman celebration on Friday July10 was wonderful. Each of us was escorted to the front of the meeting and presented with a certificate, program booklet and a beautiful pin and had our pictures taken. It was exciting to be honored the same time as Dorothy Smith from New York, Doris Mardirosia from Newark and Barbara Taylor from Long Island. I had worked with all of them during my terms as Province II President. Also honored was Dolores Conyer from the Diocese of Los Angeles. Dolores is our own Cora Gaines' daughter. Cora was our Honored Woman in 2006. In addition to our general meetings with a wonderful chaplain, great speakers and guests, and inspiring music the Triennial Meeting also included four days of workshop opportunities. These are valuable sessions where we learn and share information and experiences. I attended the following workshops: 1. "Finding God in the Recycling Bin: the Gifts of Grace of Greening" led by the Rev. Cynthia Ann Hizer. We explored ways to be green at church and encouraging our communities to be green, (one hint, it they are reluctant, build a Noah's Ark on the lawn with plastic water bottles). 2. "SoYou are a Diocesan ECW President" led by Mary MacGregor who provided much concrete and useful information on becoming an effective leader. 3."Clearing the Clutter for Grace" led by the Rev. Dr. Jane A Tamaine who encouraged us to use Benedictine Spirituality to declutter our physical space to help reclaim gifts of grace. 4. "The Gospel According to Hollywood" led by Dr. Greg Garrett where we looked at gospel themes in movies and television. This was a wonderful time, and this is just the tip of the iceberg of all that happened. I could go on and on. If you are interested, just let me know. I want to thank Greta and the Diocesan Board for selecting me as the Honored Woman from the Diocese of New Jersey this year and to thank you all for the support and encouragement you have given me over the years. As always my prayer is "God Bless the ECW and empower us for mission and ministry". I hope to see you and your people at this important gathering of our Diocese. +GEC) Dear Friends in Christ, For I am sure . . . that nothing can separate us from the love of God! Nothing can separate us from the love of God. This good news (from Romans 8) is worth celebrating in all times and places! I am writing, therefore, to invite all members of the Diocese of New Jersey to come to the Tabernacle in Ocean Grove, NJ, on Sunday, November 8, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. For directions and information, see the Ocean Grove website: www.oceangrove.org. In hard times, we are not alone. We have one another in a goodly fellowship. We can come together to praise the Lord, to lift up our hearts and to put our trust in the promises of our God. When it would be natural to fall back into fear, our Lord invites to step out in faith and make a bold and joyous witness to God's goodness and love. So, let's do it. Come to Ocean Grove for a joyous Jazz Vespers, with creative music, courageous prayer, powerful preaching and warm fellowship. I would love to see each one of our 164 churches represented on November 8th. If every congregation were to send at least a tithe of its average Sunday attendance, there would be well over 1,000 of us to make a joyful noise and to raise the roof, for Christ's sake. The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah (17:7-8) gives us a powerful word of assurance in anxious times: Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. And neither shall we. I hope to see you in Ocean Grove, on the 8th. Right Onward! Debbie's final day in diocesan house will be October 30th. Debbie was first appointed to the Congregational Development Committee in 2006. Canon Powers quickly recognized her considerable gifts and talents and invited her to assist in his office as a volunteer. She was hired to work part-time and then full time, working in recent years to assist both Lee and Bishop Romero with the Board of Missions and in support of our mission congregations. A particular achievement during her time on staff was the scheduling of over 40 building inspections. Debbie has had a wonderful ministry of training and empowerment in the areas of congregational development, church growth and lay ministry. She initiated the "Invite a Friend" Sunday program. She has consulted with congregations in the Natural Church Development program. She has organized and coordinated many diocesan events, including workshops for clergy and lay leaders, wardens, vestry and finance officers. In the past year she chaired the Congregational Development Committee and took the lead in organizing The College for Congregational Development. Debbie will be deeply missed. We rejoice with her as she celebrates her marriage. And we pray that our Lord will continue to bless and uphold her in ministry, for the building-up of the Church. Faithfully yours, The Rt. Rev.
