Bring a bible and copies of your current stewardship materials. 1. A biblical understanding of stewardship: the first session will examine the biblical narratives and teaching around the issue of stewardship. This is intended to give Vestries and Stewardship Committees a theological grounding in stewardship to better understand this important indicator of our life of discipleship. 2. Forming a Stewardship Committee and planning your events: Canon Powers will share ways in which he has worked with Vestries and Stewardship Committees to construct creative programs that communicate the teaching of stewardship to the whole congregation, and encourage members to grow in their faithful response. His approaches can be used in any size church. In one parish, faithful attention to this important ministry resulted in financial stewardship growing about 400% over eleven years, while also funding a major restoration project. Canon Powers will bring to this role his knowledge of New Jersey, his experience of parochial life and his understanding of clergy and lay leaders, along with his administrative ability and spiritual maturity. I am confident that, with the continuing support of Ms. Cecilia Alvarez, Lee will build on the good work of Canon Elizabeth Geitz. Under his pastoral leadership clergy and congregations will continue to receive strong, loving and wise support during interim ministries and times of transition. I pray that this expansion of his responsibilities will be a blessing to Lee and an enrichment of our diocesan mission. Right Onward! I am also announcing today that I have accepted, with regret, the resignation of Michael Wilkes, Manager of Information Technology, effective June 6, 2009. After six and one-half years working in this office, Michael has been hired by an IT company with whom he can advance his career in this field. I am very grateful for Mike's faithful service in this office and in our Diocese. His quiet professionalism, strong expertise, personal warmth and good humor will all be missed. We wish him well. We will be evaluating how best to continue the functions that Mike has covered in his ministry here. Given our current financial constraints, I do not anticipate that we will make a new hire to replace Mike. From anotte at newjersey.anglican.org Wed May 27 10:05:32 2009 From: anotte at newjersey.anglican.org (Ann Notte) Date: Wed May 27 10:06:55 2009 Subject: [DioNJ] Information distributed electronically... Message-ID: May 18, 2009 Dear Friends in Christ, As you know, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the Sixth Week of Easter are the traditional Rogation Days. The Latin word rogare means "to ask." For centuries, the Western Church has offered special prayers at this time of year, asking for the welfare of the crops and herds. The prayers we offer on these days are an expression of praise for our Lord, reverence for the earth and commitment to the stewardship of creation. Environmentalists continue to sound the alarm about the great danger we are in by our disregard of the welfare of the earth and skies and sea. Global climate change, the depletion of forests, the pollution of the earth - in these and a thousand other ways the good gift of this planet is threatened with harm and destruction. Do we Christians have any responsibility to respond to these threats to God's creation? We do. As a Diocese, are taking that responsibility seriously. We are seeking to become a "green" Diocese. We are taking steps to "renew, reuse, recycle" and adopt such other changes and technologies as will make us more faithful stewards of the earth and of all God's good gifts. With that commitment in mind I am glad to inform you that members of our diocesan staff have developed a plan to reduce the waste and costs of paper in our operations and administration. Beginning November 1, 2009, virtually all information distributed from Diocesan House will be done via email and the internet. This will include (but is not limited to) Diocesan Convention mailings, reports, notices, directories, meeting minutes, and more. Most of these items are already available electronically, but beginning on November 1st, they will ONLY be distributed online. Most paper production and mailings from Diocesan House will cease on that date. You may still receive certain forms of publicity, forms requiring signatures, and individual correspondence via snail mail. It is not possible to eliminate the use of all forms of paper. We should all, however, become aware of the costs involved in the excessive use of paper. There is a financial cost in terms of paper, ink, postage, and the extra work-hours that go into producing multiple large paper mailings. But there is also a cost to our planet earth through the sheer amount of timber consumed and waste produced. My hope is that this step will provide our diocesan community with more information from Diocesan House and serve as a model for you to emulate in your own congregation. As with all major changes, there will be some bumps along the road of this transition. I assure you, however, that our staff is committed to serving you throughout this process. You can greatly assist us in this process by making sure that our Diocesan Office has your current contact information (particularly your email address). More information on this transition is always available on our website at www.newjersey.anglican.org. Another area of concern that I bring to your attention is the dramatic rise in the production of service bulletins with the complete Prayer Book liturgies and hymns from the The Hymnal 1982 and/or LEVAS II. We should think carefully about the volume of paper and the associated printing costs for the copying of worship materials from books that are easily within reach in the pews. We could save a lot of expense and a few forests if we would give simple, brief liturgical directions and use the books at hand. I will be looking for ways to implement this approach at diocesan liturgies and at parish visitations and on other occasions. Rogation Days are part of the Church's life and worship, asking for God's mercy on the land, including fields and forests, lakes and rivers, crops and fruits and flowers and all good gifts. Unless we practice wise and merciful stewardship the land will be ruined and will yield nothing. The Collect for the Stewardship of Creation (page 259, BCP) asks our merciful Creator to make us thankful and to grant that we, "remembering the account that must one day give, may be faithful stewards of [God's] good gifts." Please join us in cutting back on paper and printing. It is only one small step, but it will save all of us money and will contribute to the protection and preservation of this planet earth, our island home. Faithfully yours, The Rt. Rev. George E. Councell XI Bishop of New Jersey Dear members of the Diocese of New Jersey, To achieve the goals set forth by Bishop Councell at the 2009 Convention regarding the conservation of diocesan resources and our environment, the Diocese of New Jersey will begin distributing the majority of its announcements and notices regarding diocesan news, personnel, and events through its electronic mailing lists on November 1, 2009. We encourage you to sign up for the applicable lists. You can find instructions on what they are, how to sign up, and how to use them on the Diocese of New Jersey website at http://newjersey.anglican.org/Resources/EmailLists.html. The process is safe and simple and ensures that you will receive the latest Diocesan communications. The two lists that will be used by Diocesan House are the Clergy-Announce and the Announcements mailing lists. These lists are mediated for offensive material. (1) The Clergy-Announce mailing list is a vehicle for the Diocese to send out weekly reminders of upcoming events and important communications intended for clergy only. We strongly recommend that all clergy sign up for this list. (2) The Announcements mailing list is used by the Diocese to distribute Diocesan wide communications to lay and clergy members. Please note: If you do not sign up for these mailing lists, you may not receive important communications from the Diocesan House and our Bishops. Members of the Diocese who do not have email addresses should notify the Diocesan Office to receive mail through the post office. Please call Sarah at 877 394-5281 extension 10. The Diocese of New Jersey will also introduce online registration for Ministry Institute events and our Annual Convention starting this fall. This system will allow you to register for events 7 days a week and 24 hours per day, as well as, make credit card payments for those events that carry registration fees. Along with online registration, we will still offer a mail-in option for those who request it. We encourage you to join us in our efforts to be better stewards by participating in these measures. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to contact us at Diocesan House, 877 394-5281. This is an exciting opportunity for us to become involved with some really warm, welcoming, hardworking and dedicated people. In the coming months, ideas for anticipated involvement by adults and young people of both dioceses will be forthcoming. With our long history of outreach in Costa Rica and El Salvador, your input will be helpful as we begin this journey in faith with our Ecuadorian brothers and sisters. During my most recent visit to Ecuador, I accepted Bishop Ramos? challenge of supplying laptops to the Episcopal School in Ambato, high in the Andes, 2? hours south of Quito. Here, 154 children, K ? 8th, full of promise and eager to learn, cope with 2 or 3 unbelievably antiquated PC?s. And, too, are the children attending the Cathedral School in Quito. With little money, teachers do the best they can with poor equipment. Like Ambato, these children are sponges for knowledge and deserve our help. Our goal is to supply 24 laptops, of recent vintage and gently used, (or new, of course) to support the computer programs at these schools. My hope is to have at least 3 of these by mid-July and 3 more by August 1 ready to be carried by travelers to Quito. FYI- Our own Bishop Councell and others will attend the consecration of the new Bishop of Ecuador Central leaving in late July. They have offered to take the first laptops for the children with them. "Bronwyn's background in youth ministry will provide insights into opportunities for the Episcopal Church to reach out and connect with today's youth in today's society," commented the Rev. Robert Honeychurch, interim director of the Church's Evangelism and Congregational Life Center. "The Program Officer for Lifelong Christian Formation and Youth is a key member of Evangelism and Congregational Life Center." Working in a team setting, in her new position Skov will be responsible for coordinating the overall lifelong formation ministry work at the Church Center. Skov will also be responsible for developing youth formation resources using in web, print and multimedia tools; building collaborative working relationships with constituents and networks; and coordinating youth events with a theological understanding. She will be responsible for overall coordination of the lifelong Christian formation staff. Skov is currently the Canon Missioner for Leadership Development in the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota. "Having worked in congregational, community, regional, diocesan and provincial youth ministry settings, I am concerned that we are stuck in old models for ministry that are becoming more and more impotent in this post-modern, post-Christian era," she wrote in her application letter. "I see great hope in reclaiming youth ministry and faith formation as a primary tool for evangelism in this new century." Previously, Skov held youth ministry positions in Episcopal churches in Minnesota. She holds a BA from Macalester College in Minnesota and a certificate in Youth Ministry and Theology from Princeton Youth Forums, a program of Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. CareForTheTroops is a not-for-profit interfaith effort designed to address the spiritual and psychological needs of military families while working with congregations to make them more welcoming and understanding of the issues they face. The comprehensive website, www.CareForTheTroops.org, provides tools, resources and links aimed to equip congregation to reach out and support the military and/or their family members. In the planning stages for 15 months, CareForTheTroops was created by clergy and laity of the Diocese of Atlanta. "The idea started with the Rev. Robert Certain, an Episcopal priest and ex-POW, and Billy Harrison, a vestry member and former Air Force officer, at St. Peter and St. Paul in Marietta, Georgia. I joined shortly thereafter," recalls Peter McCall, currently the Executive Director. "It's meant to be an interfaith effort to help all who have mental health needs associated with the current and previous wars. Their primary target audiences are not only the military member and their immediate family, but also the entire extended family system, congregation and community leaders, and civilian mental health professionals to help them better understand the military culture and trauma, and thus be better equipped to help those in need." He added, "We're not pro- war, we're not anti-war. We want to help the troops and their families by starting a military ministry of awareness and acceptance." Goals of the program According to CareForTheTroops.org, the goals are: To work to improve the ability of the civilian mental health infrastructure in the State of Georgia, then nationally, to work with military family members To facilitate connecting military families to providers of spiritual and psychological services familiar with the military culture and trauma To focus on addressing combat stress recovery as well as other spiritual and mental health related problems impacting the marriages and families of military veterans To educate and train clinicians, congregation and community leaders, extended family, and civilian groups about the military culture and trauma associated with military deployments in order to better assess and treat mental health symptoms, and provide more effective referrals and care Provide opportunities for additional trauma treatment training to clinicians To operate in an interfaith, non-political manner, focusing on the humanitarian interest that benefits the veterans and their extended family members Support for the program CareForTheTroops.org has attracted the attention and support of Bishop Suffragan George Packard of the Episcopal Church's Office of Federal Ministries as well as Bishop Neil Alexander of Atlanta, who wrote to his diocese on May 11: "I am pleased to announce a new ministry initiated by the rector and people of St. Peter and St. Paul in Marietta. On May 1, CareForTheTroops was launched as a 501c3 charity to benefit military members, veterans, and their families. They are developing a coalition of faith groups, civic leaders, the Georgia Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and clinicians to specialize in treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder as a network of civilian groups to fill the gaps where the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs leave off. CareForTheTroops (www.careforthetroops.org) provides an excellent model for others to use in creating a meaningful, long-term ministry to our men and women who have borne the burden of battle."
