A Day with Bishop Councell for Finance Officers, Clergy, Wardens, and Vestry
Leaders: Robert Becker, Diocesan Audit Committee; The Right Reverend George
E. Councell, Bishop of the Diocese of New Jersey; The Reverend Canon Larry
Fish, Diocesan Archivist and Historiographer; John Wood Goldsack, Diocesan
Chancellor; Canon Wanda Greene, Chief Financial Officer, and Trustees of the
Diocesan Investment Trust
This will be a day of spiritual reflection and worship with our Bishop and
workshops to equip clergy, wardens, vestry members, and finance officers for
their ministries.
Bishop Councell will lead our worship and two meditations on the
spirituality of leadership to address the following questions: "Is
leadership in the church good for your soul? The Apostle Paul lists
leadership among the spiritual gifts (Romans 12:8 and 1 Corinthians 12:28).
Is there a spirituality of leadership? How do we exercise a life of prayer
as we conduct the business of the church? How can service as warden or
member of a vestry or as a finance officer be a spiritual vocation?" Come
hear other leaders reflect on these questions and offer practical insights
and examples!
Chief Financial Officer Wanda Greene will present workshops on the following
matters:
1. Mr. Robert Becker, representing the Diocesan Audit Committee, will
provide an update on the initiatives established by the Audit Committee in
their effort to support and train congregations to perform their annual
audit by an audit committee. Other members of the Audit Committee will be
present.
2. The Trustees of the Diocesan Investment Trust will share information
about the policies and objectives of the trust as well as investment
approach, asset allocation and investment strategy in a changing
environment.
Diocesan Chancellor John Wood Goldsack will review the Constitution and
Canons of the Diocese, together with the New Jersey Statutes applicable to
the Episcopal Church. These documents, together with the Constitution and
Canons of The Episcopal Church, clearly set forth the duties and
responsibilities of clergy, wardens, vestry and financial officers. All
participants will receive copies of the Constitution and Canons for the
Diocese of New Jersey and have an opportunity to become familiar with their
role in the life of a parish or mission.
The Reverend Canon Larry Fish, Diocesan Archivist and Historiographer, will
make a presentation that will cover canonically required reports necessary
for each congregation; material generated at the local level that requires
storage for given periods of time; archival material required to be
forwarded to the Diocesan Archives, and he will answer questions raised by
those in attendance.

Clergy Silent Lenten Retreat
Leader: The Reverend Dr. Phillip Bennett, Adjunct Priest, St.
Martin-in-the-Fields, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
In our busy lives, it is easy to lose touch with the Ground of our Being,
the love which upholds and sustains us. Augustine of Hippo reminds us that
not only do our restless souls find rest in God, but that God also desires
to rest in us. As clergy, the press of daily life and work, and the noise of
our inner thoughts and emotions often crowd out the still, small voice of
God within us. Our spiritual wellness and self-care are easily pushed aside
by the tyranny of the urgent. In this silent retreat, we will come apart for
some Sabbath time; for some holy resting in the love of God, that we may be
renewed and strengthened for ministry.
When Sunday through Tuesday, March 22 - 24. Begins Sunday with registration
at 4 PM. Ends Tuesday at 3 PM.
Cost Single $175, commuter $115, all meals included
