Yes, it is a critical, complex situation. One of Calvin's most enduring legacies is the Genevan Psalter, still a vibrant and important part of hymn singing throughout protestantism in parts of Europe and featured in most all English-language hymnals in the United States. On Saturday, October 24 there will be a special presentation on this topic in relation to the Dutch tradition of metrical psalm singing. Thomas Spacht, Professor of Organ and Music Theory (retired) at Towson University in Baltimore, will address several aspects of the music of the Genevan Psalter as practiced in the Dutch Protestant Churches from the sixteenth century to the present time. In addition to historical background, questions of tempo, rhythmic vs. isorhythmic versions, organ pitch, temperament, and the special features of the seventeenth and eighteenth century Dutch organs pertaining to congregational singing, will be discussed. Musical illustrations will utilize both the organ alone and as an accompanying instrument for the singing of selected examples. Written materials and illustrations will be provided. The parish's Richards, Fowkes and Company organ is uniquely suited to accompanying this kind of hymn singing. We will gather at 9 o'clock in the morning, and will be finished before noon. While this event relates particularly to the Dutch tradition, we shall also discover ways in which this ancient, living tradition can help us explore accompanying, leading, and improvising on hymns in today's worship. You and your students are most welcome to join us! There is a suggested donation of $10.00; students with ID and seniors are free. Trinity Cathedral is holding a summer-long 50/50 raffle to raise funds for the enhancement of its outreach ministries. This year we are targeting those programs having to do with food, health and nutrition, in line with our Millennium Development Goal of ?feeding the hungry?. The Cathedral provides groceries on a bi-weekly basis through our Food Pantry. We are hosting a weekly ?Healthy Heart Farmer?s Market? and serving as a satellite feeding site for the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen. We also send a wagon full of food to the Crisis Ministry each month. Your purchase of a $20 50/50 ticket will help us to: ? Enhance our Food Pantry with items that improve the nutritional balance of the food; ? Invite our Food Pantry community for periodic meals along with nutritional education; ? Subsidize ?wagon? donations to address the needs of the Crisis Ministry food store; ? Bring our large, unused but very functional kitchen up to current health, fire and safety code regulations so we can serve even more people with this underused resource! This is a 50/50 cash raffle; if all tickets are sold, you could win $20,000! The winner will be announced at our Cajun/Creole diner or September 12. The panels will be compiled into eight quilts, one quilt for each convocation. This is an opportunity for every congregation to take part in the celebration of the 225th Anniversary of the Diocese of New Jersey. To help celebrate this milestone our Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, will be our guest and speaker at the upcoming convention on March 5-6, 2010 in Cherry Hill. The quilts will be displayed at this convention to help create a festive atmosphere. The eight convocations will house the quilts and use them throughout the year at their events and return them each year to be displayed at the conventions. Congratulations to Spotswood for being the first to send in their project, and thank you to those who followed. I am amazed at the wonderful work and ideas submitted. Please don't be left out. We'd like each quilt to be inclusive of every congregation in this diocese. The quilting group will need some time to put all these blocks together before convention. Please send your completed panel to us by the deadline September 15, 2009. It would be helpful if [on a piece of paper or email] you can include one or two lines explaining your design. If you've already sent your panel, please email your brief description of the panel. I am looking forward to seeing your artwork.
