Subject: [DioNJ] Spring Church in Metropolitan Areas Conference
Message-ID: <5FB9A0249C4F449F858F7DB80F7C0297@capital.local>
Church in Metropolitan Areas announces its spring 2009 conference.
We are pleased to announce the Spring Church in Metropolitan Areas
Conference entitled "The Global City and the Environment: A Faith Based
Perspective". The conference will be held Monday, April 20th through
Thursday, April 23rd in the Meadowlands, NJ.
The Global City and the Environment: A Faith Based Perspective will explore
the results of our built environment and the impact our cities have on
building, sustaining and recycling our environment. The Meadowlands in
northern New Jersey sits just minutes from the Empire State building and
midtown Manhattan. Formerly an industrial waste site for the old industrial
cities of New York, Newark, and Jersey City it is now becoming a new edge
city offering eco-tourism as one of its entertainment attractions along with
Xanadu and Giants Stadium. We will be hosted by the New Jersey Meadowlands
Commission www.njmeadowlands.gov.
Our program will feature a day long session with the New Jersey Meadowlands
Commission at their center in the Meadowlands. We will also have sessions
with GreenFaith, Interfaith Partners in Action for the Earth,
www.GreenFaith.org. and with Metro IAF and
particularly the New Jersey IAF group that has fought the chromium battle in
against Honeywell and most recently with PPG in Jersey City,
www.industrialareasfoundation.org.
Our biblical and theological reflection for the conference will be led by
Judith Jones and Edmundo Desueza, CMA's resident leaders for this
reflection. The theme of their studies will be "What we have seen, what is,
and what is to come" using the first three chapters of the Book of
Revelation.
We will be meeting in a variety of sites to give participants a chance to
experience first hand the environmental issues. We will be staying at the
Marriott Fairfield Inn 850 Paterson Plank R. East Rutherford, NJ
201-507-5222. Each person needs to make their own lodging arrangements.
The cost of the conference is $150 per person. Further readings materials
and details of the conference will be passed on with registration.

persons of faith who seek to build vital congregations in our metropolitan
areas.

Subject: [DioNJ] St. Andrew's Spring Fling
Message-ID:
Excitement Builds as Martha's Vineyard Comes to New Providence
Warm sun and gentle breezes are certainly inviting after a long winter
.that's what you will find at the annual Spring Fling fundraiser for St.
Andrew's Nursery School and Kindergarten on April 24th, in New Providence.
Transforming a reputable education hall into a Martha's Vineyard inspired
paradise promises an escape into a world of excitement, prizes, cocktails,
catered gourmet hors d'oeuvres and lively music.
This exciting event, hosted annually by the St. Andrew's Parent's
Association, is the most vital fundraising effort for the school. The magic
of this affair starts with the intention of the fundraising dollars, divided
three ways: a scholarship fund to support families who need financial
assistance for early childhood education, updated school and outdoor
equipment and a designated outreach project.
This year, for the outreach project, St. Andrew's is partnering with Reach
Out and Read, a national program which promotes literacy among children at
risk. As a supporter of Reach Out and Read, St. Andrew's contributions go
toward purchasing new books that are distributed to children from birth to
five years old during their "well visit" to their pediatrician in addition
to supplying books to create literature-rich waiting rooms. A Reach Out and
Read site has recently been established at Overlook Hospital.
All are welcome and encouraged to attend the event. With thousands of
dollars donated by local and national vendors to create magnificent basket
raffles, a silent auction and buy it now boards (including Giants/Jets
tickets, American Girl, a $500 gift certificate to The Mall at Short Hills,
Knicks signed basketballs, Wii, iPod - iTouch, Weber grill and a week in
Vermont), everyone is bound to go home with a prize! To obtain tickets, you
can call the school at 908-464-4878 or simply go online:
www.standrews-school.org/. The event is from 7:30 - 10:30 pm at St.
Andrew's Parish Hall, 419 South Street in New Providence.

World Labyrinth Day Walk
Saturday, May 2nd

The Cathedral Labyrinth Ministry will host a walk of labyrinths at Trinity
Cathedral as part of World Labyrinth Day, a celebration to share the
opportunity for prayer, contemplation and reflection offered by labyrinths.
The Cathedral is home to a Ravenna-style, 7-circuit, permanent labyrinth
installed in 2004.
To mark the World Labyrinth Day, the Labyrinth Ministry has made
arrangements to place two additional labyrinths within the Cathedral to
provide more opportunities to walk and to experience different types of
labyrinth designs.
The program will begin with a welcoming prayer and brief presentation on
using labyrinths as active prayer and contemplation. Participants will then
be invited to walk a labyrinth. The program closes with a prayer and
fellowship.

"SUN & SHADOW- The Soul of Brazil : Photographs by Amber Palecek" Opens at
Trinity Cathedral April 26.
Trenton, April 15, 2008:
Trinity Cathedral, Trenton, is host to a new exhibition of photographs by
Amber Palecek from April 26- June 26. In twenty striking images, in both
black & white and in color, Palecek captures the many faces of the city of
Salvador Brazil, where she spent six weeks as a volunteer with Cross
Cultural Solutions.
"My goal was to stay in a city and see it from all angles not just the
pretty tourist end laid out for visitors. I didn't want to pass through a
culture with out knowing it on a deeper level. I photographed everything
that caught my eye during those 6 weeks. People, landscape, and objects all
seemed deeply intertwined."
Through her camera's lens, Amber brings us her unique vision of that
intertwining of poverty and hope, beauty and decay, of sun and shadow.
The exhibition will be in Synod Hall at Trinity Cathedral, 801 W. State St.,
Trenton, from April 26-June 26, 2009. (Please call for hours (609)

Recovery Ministries of the Diocese of New Jersey is pleased to invite one
and all to our 2nd annual
Recovery Sunday Celebration
Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
Trinity Cathedral, Trenton
Celebrant: The Rt. Rev. George Councell
Bishop of the Diocese of New Jersey
Preacher: The Rt. Rev. Mark Hollingsworth, Jr.
Bishop of the Diocese of Ohio
Bishop Hollingsworth is a true renaissance man whose hobbies and interests
include music, antique car restoration and ice hockey (he plays goalie).
Many of us were privileged to meet him as he offered himself to our own
Episcopal search process in 2003. At that time he shared, "Perhaps my most
significant spiritual experience has been 17 years of recovery as an
alcoholic, Sobriety has been a vehicle through which God has taught me how
little of life is within my power to control, how great is my responsibility
for that which is, and how the rest I must surrender in trust to God. It's
a learning that has yet to let me down." After more than two decades in
recovery, Bishop Hollingsworth has a most compelling message of hope and new
life to share.
All are welcome:
recovering alcoholics, addicts, family members, friends & advocates.
Share the good news with AA, NA, Alanon, Alateen and all the 12-step groups
that meet in our congregations.
Come and be blessed.

Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC) Facilitators and Presenters Training
Leader: The Reverend Canon William H. Barnwell, Coordinator
National Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC) is a congregational-based
Christian formation program for adults that builds community while
encouraging individual spiritual growth. DOCC consists of 18-24 sessions,
with each session containing two parts. The first part is a presentation led
either by clergy members or theologically trained lay persons. This is
followed by an hour-long response in small groups led by members of the
congregation trained to facilitate the discussion. All presenters and
facilitators receive 18 or more hours of training. This three-day event
provides the 18 contact hours of training for presenters and facilitators.
The rector and vestry need to be fully supportive of DOCC in order for it to
be successful. Recruit two people from your congregation to be small group
facilitators for every 7-9 DOCC participants. Your clergy person or a
theologically trained lay person should train to be a presenter. One way to
run this program, especially if resources are tight, is to combine your
efforts with nearby churches. This program, for deepening the Christian
Faith, works very well when run by a group of churches. If possible, the
vestry should develop a budget to cover the costs for training their people.
Another option, is for the church to pay half the expenses and take up a
special collection ("pass-the-hat") for the remainder. See below for
scholarship information. Sponsored by the Congregational Development
Committee.

Crossroads Anti-racism Organizing was founded in 1986 as an effort to
develop new directions in understanding and combating the root causes of
institutional racism in the United States. The work of Crossroads is to
train teams within institutions, helping them to analyze racism and to
develop and implement strategies to dismantle racism within their
structures. Crossroads training begins with the ability to analyze systemic
racism. Then, provided with a comprehensive understanding of racism, an
intensive training process equips teams with strategic skills to lead their
institutions toward long term and permanent transformation. For almost 20
years, Crossroads has provided consultation and training services to
institutions and organizations and teams with the necessary skills and tools
that are needed to bring about systemic change.

Teaching & Addressing Stewardship
Leader: The Reverend Lee Powers, Canon to the Ordinary, Diocese of New
Jersey
Congregations are encouraged to send a team of individuals who will be
working on stewardship for these two presentations. Bring a bible and copies
of your current stewardship materials.
1. A biblical understanding of stewardship: the first session will
examine the biblical narratives and teaching around the issue of
stewardship. This is intended to give Vestries and Stewardship Committees a
theological grounding in stewardship to better understand this important
indicator of our life of discipleship.
2. Forming a Stewardship Committee and planning your events: Canon
Powers will share ways in which he has worked with Vestries and Stewardship
Committees to construct creative programs that communicate the teaching of
stewardship to the whole congregation, and encourage members to grow in
their faithful response. His approaches can be used in any size church. In
one parish, faithful attention to this important ministry resulted in
financial stewardship growing about 400% over eleven years, while also
funding a major restoration project.

THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH& VISUAL ARTS
Diocese of New Jersey Chapter
Dear friends,
First let me express my gratitude to all of you who came and saw the icon
exhibition in
Synod Hall. It was one of the most visited and most successful shows ECVA
has had the
privilege to sponsor. Many visitors came from outside the Diocesan
community. In
addition, two icons were sold, of which 25% went to the Cathedral, totaling
$700. One
of those sold was generously donated to the Cathedral by the purchaser.
Our exhibitions vary widely. This next one is a series of photographs, in
both black &
white and in color, taken by a gifted young photographer of the city of
Salvador, Brazil.
Amber Palecek volunteered with a group called Cross Cultural Solutions and
has captured
the essence of her experience through her camera's lens.
I invite you and your congregation to come and see these exceptional photos,
and to
attend the opening reception on Sunday afternoon, May 3rd from 3-5 pm.

Dear Friends,
I wish to share my joy with you that after over two blessed years of serving
St. John's in Passaic, New Jersey as priest-in-charge, the parish has called
me as its rector. The installation will be on May 10th during the regular
visitation of Bishop Beckwith.
I realize that few of my colleagues in my former Diocese of New Jersey, or
present Diocese of Newark, can attend because it falls on a Sunday morning
on which they should be doing something else. It's also Mothers' Day, which
lays claim to many would-be lay visitors. Yet it's going to be a wonderful
morning. It's even May Festival!
I thank you for your prayers, including that Saint John's will continue to
grow and be the happy parish before our Lord that it is. In case you would
like to come, the invitation follows to all.
With gratitude and prayers, I remain;
Yours faithfully in Christ,
Fr. William Thiele (Bill + )
By the Grace of God,
The People, Vestry and Wardens
of Saint John's Church in Passaic, New Jersey

invite you to

Mostly Motets
On Sunday May 31, at 3:30 p.m., St. Matthew's in Pennington will present a
concert of both acappella and accompanied music by Mostly Motets. This
concert will present an array of vocal works, as the group's repertoire
includes both secular and sacred music from 1200 to the present day.
Mostly Motets is a vocal ensemble made up of ten to sixteen musicians from
the Yardley/Princeton area, singing under the direction of Timothy
Carpenter. The organization was founded in 1996 as a sight-singing group,
but it quickly evolved into a performing chamber choir with several concert
engagements each year. Many of the singers of Mostly Motets are former or
current members of Princeton Pro Musical. Others have sung with Princeton
Opera Association, the Westminster Choir, the Pearson Ensemble, and various
church and community choirs.
The event is free, with a freewill offering being taken toward the parish's
new Walker Organ. We invite you to come and join us at St. Matthew's, 300 S.
Main St. in Pennington.

Dear Clergy and Parish Leaders:
By this time of the year most of your high school seniors have decided where
they will attend college. We would like to connect these students to a

Would you please include the following blurb in your church bulletin for the
next four weeks as well as your May or June newsletter?
For more information or to submit student contact information directly,
please contact the Rev. Greg Bezilla (bezilla@rutgers.edu) or the Rev.

Keeping Connected While at College
Are you a college or university student? Are young people in your parish,
or a member of your family, heading off to college? The Diocese of New
Jersey would like to help all students connect with the Episcopal campus
ministry or the local parish church closest to their school, so that they
can be welcomed and supported during this next stage of their lives.
To connect with a campus ministry visit:
http://newjersey.anglican.org/Resources/YoungAdult/campusministry.html#
You'll find an on-line referral form for connecting students to campus
ministries, a link to a list of campus ministries around the country, and a
directory of campus ministries in the Diocese of New Jersey (currently
Rutgers, TCNJ, Princeton, and Rowan). For each contact submitted using the
on-line form, a member of the campus ministry team will alert the
