OVERCOMING RACISM:
An exhibit in the Diocese of New Jersey
A series of six oils by Corinne Peters and Ruth
Councell
Exhibited initially at the Anti-racism Conference No More in My Church! in November 2005, then at the Diocesan Convention in Cherry Hill in 2006, the paintings were revised and exhibited again at the 2007 Anti-racism Conference at Trinity Cathedral in Trenton.
In these large-scale oil paintings, the artists have combined historic images of racism with well-known heroic resistors, activists and martyrs in the struggle against it. Also depicted are individuals who quietly overcame the obstacles that racism imposed, and made significant contributions to the common good.
We lift up the ongoing struggle against racism, and those who gave their lives to it, so that we may be inspired and strengthened to build upon what they have accomplished.
The artists, of different racial backgrounds, are grateful for the opportunity to work together in this cause, and for the deepening of their understanding and friendship through this process. Read how the
paintings came to be.
