Institute Spring 2008: continued Analyzing and Understanding Systemic Racism: Introductory Training (2.5 days) Leaders: Crossroads Ministry instructors The Anti-Racism Commission of the Diocese of New Jersey offers this introductory training event to lay persons and clergy interested in learning about racism and potentially joining the Team to fight racism in our diocese. Teens and adults, diocesan committees and commissions, seminary students and diaconate students are welcome.
Crossroads Ministry was founded in 1986 as an effort to develop new directions in understanding and combating the root causes of institutional racism in the United States. Now, following many years of research and experimentation, a variety of new approaches, programs, and resources are being implemented. The work of Crossroads is to train teams within institutions, helping them to analyze racism and to develop and implement strategies to dismantle racism within their structures. Crossroads training begins with the ability to analyze systemic racism. Then, provided with a comprehensive understanding of racism, an intensive training process equips teams with strategic skills to lead their institutions toward long term and permanent transformation. For almost 20 years, Crossroads has provided consultation and training services to institutions and organizations, facilitating the development of hundreds of internal transformation teams. Crossroads also designs programs, resources, and networks that provide teams with the necessary skills and tools that are needed to bring about systemic change and lead toward the elimination of systemic racism within their institutions and organizations. Preacher: The Right Reverend Robert Hibbs, retired Bishop Suffragan, Diocese of West Texas and Vice President of Episcopal Recovery Ministries Celebrant: The Right Reverend George Councell, Bishop, Diocese of New Jersey The Recovery Ministries of the Diocese of New Jersey are pleased to invite one and all to the diocese’s inaugural Recovery Sunday Celebration. Leader: Darlene Watson, Lay Rector, the Retreat Team and the Servant Council Sponsored by the New Jersey Episcopal Cursillo, Diocese of New Jersey, the Cursillo weekend brings together a diverse group of Episcopalians to share the richness of many modes of worship and to broaden each one’s appreciation for our Church. Lay people conduct the weekend with two or three members of the clergy functioning as spiritual advisors. Cursillo presumes that those who attend are already well grounded in the faith. It is not intended to be a conversion experience but an enriching and deepening of what is already there. It often provides new insights into our faith as well as fostering ministry among lay people. The four days are filled with talks and group discussions with emphasis on the doctrine of Grace, the Sacraments, and the great Cursillo tripod: Piety, Study, and Action. Plus there is fellowship, singing, good food, and time for privacy, meditation, prayer, and walks. Eucharist is celebrated each day
Cursillo (Cur-SEE’-yo) is a Spanish word that means “short course”. (“Short” for “A Short Course in Christian Living”). It began in Spain in the Roman Catholic Church in the early 1940s. First, Roman Catholic Cursillos were held in the USA in 1957, in Spanish, and then eventually in English. It was taken up by the Episcopal Church in the USA in the mid 1970s and then by the Anglican Church in Canada. Cursillo is a movement of the church. Its purpose is to help those in the church understand their individual callings to be Christian Leaders. The leadership may be exercised in work situations, in the family and social life, in leisure activities, and within the Church environment. Leadership, in Cursillo, does not mean power over others, but influence on others; all of us need to be aware that we can exert a positive influence on those around us. Cursillo is patterned on Jesus’ own example. He searched out and called a small group of potential leaders. He trained them by word and example and inspired them with a vision. He linked them together and sent them out into the world to bring the world to Him. Creating

Rimassa, Trinity Church, Rocky Hill; The Reverend Peter Stimpson, Associate, St. Matthew’s Church, Pennington and Priest-in-Charge, Holy Trinity Chapel, Spring Lake The dynamics of interpersonal relationships within ministry require that the clergy make choices which lead to healthy or unhealthy relationships. The stressors clergy face are many and over time may lead to a loss of emotional, psychological and spiritual wholeness. This workshop focusses upon the makeup of healthy relationships by addressing boundary issues, sexual health, and potential warning signs that may lead to unhealthy choices, i.e. unhealthy relationships. Includes tools that may be used to establish or maintain healthy relationships. Sponsored by the Pastoral Response Team of the Diocese of New Jersey
Leader: Andrew Weeks, conference leader and author on evangelism The Magnetic Church Conference is non-confrontational, practical evangelism to help our churches attract and retain new members. The Diocesan Congregational Development Committee is pleased that noted evangelist Andrew Weeks will be presenting this event. To learn more about his ministry, see magnetic-church.com. Sponsored by the Diocesan Congregational Development Committee
Andrew Weeks is a cradle Anglican, born in Canada. After working in Canada, he moved to the United States and worked for Arthur Andersen, Walter Kidde, and in other corporate settings as an executive or management consultant on operations. He began his work as an evangelist helping churches to change their ways to reach out to church visitors after encountering obstacles in his own search for a new church community, including facing church attitudes that it was “All up to the visitor to figure things out” and, “If visitors were really interested, they would figure it out!” Andrew Weeks resolved to adapt for churches the effective customer-oriented processes used in most of today’s successful businesses. He began by writing a “manual”: Welcome! Tools and Techniques for New Member Ministry, his first book published in 1992 by The Alban Institute. Concurrently, he began to develop a conference ministry to help empower churches to be more effective and intentional in their evangelism programs. He left his corporate career in 1994; conference ministry is his full time and only vocation. Hosted by the Reverend Frank Crumbaugh, Rector, Holy Innocents’ Church, Beach Haven, New Jersey This is a play day at the beach. Its stated agenda is NO agenda, other than to relax and enjoy one another’s company. The exercises of the day include volley ball, hammock snoozing, feasting, laughing and scratching, reading the first “beach trash” of the season, surf and bay dabbling, boat riding, fishing… You get the idea.
