Spirituality Retreat An Invitation to Christian Spiritual
Teaching: How God Loves, Transforms, and Makes People Whole Explore a spiritual path whose profundity and richness have nurtured people for over two millennia. Discover personalities and teachings from ancient times to the present that speak of the value of a conscious, intentional relation with God. This bond not only grounds human identity, through a clearer sense of self and a greater appreciation of potential, but also provides an effective passage through difficult situations of life, such as sickness, death, loss, failure, and separation — the condition for entering into the fullness of joy. Hear others’ stories of spiritual growth and tell your own. Explore spiritual practices, including modes of prayer, discernment, and rituals for social change, a fine way to forge a spiritual path or to attend to the one you tread. Sponsored by the Right Onward Committee. Traduccion simultanea al Español disponible. Simultaneous Spanish translation available upon request.

This training is required every five years and is required for all clergy, wardens, employees, and anyone regularly working with or around children or youth. Sponsored by the Pastoral Response Team of the Diocese of New Jersey.
SEPTEMBER 26 (for clergy) Deacons
Day with Bishop Councell A time for deacons to come together with Bishop Councell and with one another, the day begins with the bishop celebrating the Holy Eucharist. He will then share his impressions of General Convention and events in the Episcopal Church. The archdeacons will each give a brief report related to their respective area of oversight. Sponsored by the Deacons’ Council.

He is Vice-President of Province II and serves on the Board of Trustees of General Theological Seminary, the Presiding Bishop’s Council of Advice, and the Joint Standing Committee on Program, Budget and Finance. OCTOBER 5-7 (for clergy) Annual
Clergy Conference: Clergy as a Public Person This conference is an occasion to grapple with, and come to celebrate, this most unexpected part of ordained ministry. As Bishop Sisk’s says, 'From my experience, first as a seminary dean for 14 years and now for the last 12 years as a bishop, the thing that priests and deacons do not expect (I certainly didn't) is the extent to which, once ordained, their lives are not their own. The ordained person becomes a "public person" whether she or he expects to or not, whether he or she wants it or not. It is simply a fact.' The purpose of the conference is to reflect on this fact and its several dimensions.
The Right Reverend Mark Sisk is the fifteenth Bishop of the Diocese of New York. He was installed on September 29, 2001, after his consecration as Bishop Coadjutor in 1998. Prior to his election as Coadjutor, from 1984 through 1998, Bishop Sisk was President and Dean of Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Under his leadership new models for theological education for seminarians, continuing education for clergy, and the first doctoral degree in congregational development were instituted. From 1977 through 1984, Bishop Sisk served as an Archdeacon in the Diocese of New York. He started the Metropolitan Japanese Ministry and nurtured the first Latino congregations in Yonkers. Bishop Sisk’s early ministry was as curate of Christ Church in New Brunswick, New Jersey followed by a three-year call as associate rector, Christ Church, Bronxville, New York and as Rector of St. John’s, Kingston, New York, where he co-founded the Religious Council of Kingston. OCTOBER 10 (for everyone) Urban
Ministry Retreat Urban Ministry in the Diocese of New Jersey is sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with all who live or work in our urban centers by preaching, teaching and advocating in the power of the Holy Spirit. Given this stated vision, in this all day retreat with prayers and reflections, we will:

A powerful preacher, she has had opportunities to share the Good News in all kinds of settings around the world. OCTOBER 12 (for everyone) 5th Annual Trinity Cathedral Community Day Trinity Cathedral will once again host its annual Community Day Golf Event. Throughout the Diocese, this has quickly become a broadly anticipated activity and the Cathedral is most grateful that this is the case. In total, over $80,000 has been generated to assist the Cathedral’s mission and ministry. As usual, there will be an on-course Eucharist celebrated by Bishop Councell to begin the day, followed by an 18-hole “shamble” and dinner. Everyone, no matter the skill level is encouraged to participate . . . or just come for dinner. Several churches are gearing up to wrest the Bishop’s Cup from St. George’s-by-the-River, Rumson.
OCTOBER 24 (for everyone) Equipping
the Servants: A Day of Workshops A day of workshops designed to equip the “servants of God” for service to God and ministry in and beyond the congregation. The theme for this year reflects to the diocesan vision initiative: Spiritual Renewal. You may select up to four workshops, each one hour and 15 minutes, from offerings such as Lectio Divina, developing your spiritual personality, different ways of praying, exploring the call of a deacon, and reflections on the Millennium Development Goals. Sponsored by the Congregational Development Committee. Download a PDF brochure.
OCTOBER 24 (for everyone, especially those in youth ministry) Back
to Basics: Building a Sustainable Youth Ministry Program at Your
Church (workshop at the Equipping the Servants: A Day
of Workshops) Are you looking to start or revive youth ministry at your church? Do you wish you had the right plan for long-term youth ministry? We will explore the basics of volunteer leadership, program, safety, behavior, and formation.
NOVEMBER 5 (for laity) [New date, was 29 October] Reading
the Lessons Aloud Effectively How often have you been called upon to read scripture that was simply “impossible?” You know, the one with forty-six names from the Old Testament or one of St. Paul’s interminable run-on sentences! Ms. Semmes-Thorne will work with you to improve your skills in the oral interpretation of literature, i.e., reading aloud in church. The object is not to teach you to read aloud (you already know how to do that), but to help you to learn to read aloud more effectively for your congregation’s understanding. This workshop will take place in the sanctuary of the church. You will learn a series of simple tools to use in preparing a reading and have an opportunity to work with these concepts in a coaching session involving readings from the lectionary.
Melissa Semmes-Thorne, president of Speaking with Power and Effectiveness for Adults and Kids (SPEAK), has been helping people to read aloud more effectively for many years. She has a degree in theatre and the oral interpretation of literature from Northwestern University. Ms. Semmes-Thorne has coached lectors at many levels, from beginners to trained readers; from cathedrals to level-one churches. She has helped to improve the lector skills of readers at all age levels. NOVEMBER 7 (for young adults) Young
Adults Retreat Take some time apart with other young adults, ages 18 through 35, to reflect together in an atmosphere of prayer and quiet to enjoy God’s love for us and renew our love for God. Sponsored by the Right Onward Committee. Traduccion simultanea al Español disponible. Simultaneous Spanish translation available upon request.
The Reverend Gregory Bezilla is Chaplain of the Episcopal Campus Ministry at Rutgers University, based at Canterbury House in New Brunswick, New Jersey. When she is not working, Deborah loves to cook, hike, and read. She has a passion for classical music and Japanese art. NOVEMBER 14 (for everyone) Deepening

Conference: The Church’s Role in Building a “Post-Racial” America Byron Rushing’s long service in Massachusetts state government, in the Episcopal Church, as an outspoken advocate for human rights, civil rights, peace and justice, will inform his address. Mr Rushing is uniquely qualified to move comfortably back and forth on the secular-sacred continuum. He will focus on anti-racism strategies in both church and state, and the conference may be expected to address some of the more controversial issues around racism in society such as affirmative action, educational testing, access to employment in such key public service professions as the police and public health. Sponsored by the Anti-Racism Commission.
Byron Rushing is well known as an anti-racism advocate and activist. He has been a representative of the Massachusetts House of Representatives since 1982 and has sponsored many bills whose aim has been the removal of poverty and injustice and the empowerment of disadvantaged communities. Clergy Day: The Gospels Come to Church What does the New Testament and especially its four Gospel books say about Christian liturgy? New Testament studies are looking at this question again with surprising results. And what happens when the Gospels are read in the liturgical assembly? This has long been a question of interest to liturgical studies, but it can be approached again with fresh insight. This program will consider the Gospels and Christian liturgy from both points of view. Sponsored by the Clergy Day Planning Committee.
