Ministry Institute Fall 2007: continued

Healthy Choices, Healthy Relationships
The dynamics of interpersonal relationships within ministry require that the priest make choices which will lead to healthy or unhealthy relationships. The stressors we face as priests are many and over time may lead to a loss of emotional, psychological and spiritual wholeness. This workshop focuses upon the makeup of healthy relationships by addressing boundary issues, sexual health, and potential warning signs that may be leading us to unhealthy choices, i.e. unhealthy relationships. Discussion include tools which may be used to either establish or maintain healthy relationships. Sponsored by the Pastoral Response Team of the Diocese of New Jersey.

Fireweed Evangelism
The average Episcopalian invites someone to church once every 28 years! Come to this workshop to learn how the Diocese of New Jersey can dramatically change this statistic. You will be helped to discover your personal motivation for engaging in evangelism at your comfort level and learn tangible and proven ways to welcome and incorporate the newcomer into your congregation. Practical methods will be explored
and you’ll take away a few samples that you can build on.

Advent Clergy Day
Advent Clergy Day has traditionally focused on preparing clergy, either through academic presentations or spiritual exercises, to lead their parishes and institutions in the quietly expectant season of Advent. This year, that tradition is continued in the presentations of the Reverend Martin Smith, a gifted retreat leader, teacher, and author.

We often hear that “people are spiritually hungry.” In this day of reflection and discussion, we’ll explore a critical task at the heart of contemporary ministry: recognizing the often inarticulate desire for intimacy with God, which motivates many to come to our churches. How and why does that thirst get frustrated so often in our churches? How can we learn better to discern what people are thirsting for? How can we renew our preaching and ministries around the central task of helping people re-imagine the presence of God in their lives and engage with it?

Discerning your Spiritual Gifts
Have you ever wondered: “What are my talents for ministry? How I can put my God-given gifts to good use in my parish and in the world?” Then this workshop is for you! In the first session you will discover what the Bible has to say about spiritual gifts and then answer a series of questions designed to gauge your innate talents and proclivities towards certain skills and interests. In the next phase you will key your answers onto a grid which will reveal your strengths and interests. In the final phase you will see how these strengths and interests may be applied to action in your parish and in the world. You may find some surprising results! If you have done such an analysis in the past, don’t be hesitant to try this again. Our talents and interests do change with time and situation in life.?
