Clergy Day We often hear that “people are spiritually hungry.” In this day of reflection and discussion, we’ll explore a critical task at the heart of contemporary ministry: recognizing the often inarticulate desire for intimacy with God, which motivates many to come to our churches. How and why does that thirst get frustrated so often in our churches? How can we learn better to discern what people are thirsting for? How can we renew our preaching and ministries around the central task of helping people re-imagine the presence of God in their lives and engage with it?
The Reverend Martin L. Smith is currently Theologian-in-Residence at St. Columba’s Church in Washington, DC. His most popular books are The Word is Very Near You, A Season for the Spirit, and Reconciliation. He has traveled extensively in the USA and Canada over the last twenty-five years: preaching; leading retreats, parish and diocesan renewal events; and giving lectures and seminars. He was also Chaplain to the House of Bishops for several years. He was invited to join the staff of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2002 and works there full-time as a writer.
