Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Dear Friends in Christ,
I am happy to tell you that, at about 10:00 on the morning of November 10th, I stood at Gilman's Point at the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania - the highest peak in Africa. I was able to reach that point only with the help and direction of my hiking companion, the Rev. Deacon Dan Fowler, (St. Barnabas' Church, Bainbridge Island, WA; formerly of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, IL) and our two Tanzanian guides, James and Bura. It was glorious and unforgettable.
The trek up the mountain was more of an extreme physical challenge for me than I had anticipated. It wasn't pretty, but I made it!
Thank you for your prayers and good will and encouragement. I welcome your continuing prayers as I prepare now to travel to Spain and, over the next four weeks, to walk a portion of the medieval pilgrimage route known as the Camino to Santiago de Compostela.
I look forward to rejoining you in our work together in January.
Faithfully yours in Christ,
The Right Reverend George E. Councell
XI Bishop of New Jersey
