The Archives of the Diocese of New Jersey

The Archives of the Diocese of New Jersey is a repository of materials on the history of the diocese as well as on the development of the Episcopal Church.  There is a vast treasury of data on the churches of the diocese, including information on their clergy and laity.  This material has been acquired and made accessible for the use of both professional and non-professional researchers.

Officially established in 1990 by the Reverend Canon Laurence D. Fish, the archives moved from the basement of 808 West State Street to a more convenient location in the building at the rear of the historic property in 2002.  Father Fish continues as Historiographer of the Diocese of New Jersey, as well as its Archivist.

Parish histories and photographs, a complete collection of the diocesan magazine/newspaper from its first publication in 1912, a complete run of our Journal from 1785 to the present, a fine library of research titles, and genealogical aides are just some of the resources available here for your use.

Staff includes Carol Bishop, who has volunteered many hours in the converting of paper Confirmation/Reception records onto a disk format.  She has concluded the years of the 1940s and 1950s and at present is continuing to bring the records up to date.  It is tedious work for which the entire staff is grateful for her dedication to that task.  The electronic storage of this material will help in at least two ways: to quickly find information for the persons confirmed or received into the churches of this Diocese, and for genealogical research by family members.  When this project is completed we will have the records from 1875 to the present.

The Archives was given a set of large bookshelves which were installed in late 2005.  This has afforded us the opportunity to catalogue our library of books and, shortly, to do the same for pamphlets.  This has been primarily the work of Paula Morgan, whose professional library experience at Princeton University has been a great asset.

The indexing of histories of the Diocese is in the capable hands of Deacon Mary Ann Jensen, formerly a curator at Princeton University Library’s Depart-ment of Rare Books and Special Collections.

For preliminary information regarding use of the Archives you may call us  at (609) 394-5281 X15 or email to archives@newjersey.anglican.org.  Arrange-ments, if necessary, can be made for your visit and use of the collections.
